The principles of Abu Hanifah’s methodology are summarized in his own statement:
Depending on their views of human nature and the place of man in the universe and in the wider context of existence, individuals and groups have developed their own understanding of values and worldview from which they formulate ideas, concepts and theories about individual and collective human life, and from which they devise and plan social and political institutions and thus implement their understanding or philosophy of life.
The Question:
It is well known that there are a large number of Islamic groups. What is your advice regarding those groups who fall under the generality of the Qur’an and Sunna [Claming them as their point of reference] but differ in their application and understandings regarding particular issues?
An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Qur’an. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read the Qur’an just like you but I don’t understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur’an do?”

‘’Know that the key to bliss [sa’adah] lies in following the sunnah and in emulating the life of Rasul Allah in all that issues from him and in all his doings even if it concerns the manner of his eating, rising, sleeping and speaking. I do not say this in relation to rituals in worship only because there is no way for neglecting the sunnah reported of him in such matters – but what I say includes every aspect of our daily life.’’ [Kitab Al-Arbaiin fi Usul Ad-Din p. 89]
